Chris Eubank Jr could return to a super-middleweight world title fight after middleweight defeat in Conor Benn rematch

Chris Eubank Jr could return to boxing at super-middleweight with routes to a world title challenge available to him.

Eubank Jr has had a long professional career, packed with high-profile fights, but although he has held the lightly regarded IBO strap, he has never won a world championship.

Most recently Eubank headlined at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he fought Conor Benn twice at middleweight, with a fight-day rehydration clause. He won the first bout and lost the second.

Widely viewed as being weight drained, Eubank Jr has said he had "issues" he needs to recover from.

He could return to boxing at super-middleweight and there will be paths towards a world title fight open to him at 168lbs.

Terence Crawford beat Canelo Alvarez to become the undisputed super-middleweight world champion. Crawford has retired now and new champions will take up those 168lb belts.

The WBC has elevated Christian Mbilli to become their super-middleweight world champion. With Alvarez ranked No 1, the Mexican superstar could be on course to fight Mbilli.

Eubank Jr could also get in the reckoning for an eventual fight with Mbilli or Alvarez for the WBC title.

"Absolutely. Chris Eubank a tremendous fighter. I believe he sacrificed too much with the weight and he's a natural fighter for that division. Great potential. Super fighter," WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told Your Site.

"He's a world-class fighter without a doubt."

He added: "We're going to address the situation in the following weeks to see what is coming up for Mbilli and the division. Of course, Canelo, [Jaime] Munguia, Lester Martinez, Luka Plantic. There are so many fighters who can make great fights for the champion, Mbilli.

"A tremendous kid, great story behind [Mbilli], from Cameroon to France to Canada. He won the WBC Continental Americas championship, eight title defences. Then he won the Interim title, defended it in the fight of the year against Lester Martinez and the WBC ordered his fight with [Hamzah] Sheeraz. When Sheeraz took another direction, the WBC voted in favour to name him the WBC world champ."

Ilford's Sheeraz is in prime position to challenge for the WBO world title at super-middleweight and will be favoured to win it. Sheeraz's promoter Frank Warren has also thrown down the gauntlet to Eubank Jr.

There would be an opportunity there for Eubank Jr to challenge for top level honours. Warren would welcome a Sheeraz versus Eubank Jr fight.

"I would do that all day long. All day long. I'd bet my house on Hamzah doing a job," Warren told Your Site.

"Let's see what happens. Or if he wants to step up again, Conor Benn, do that in a heartbeat. Any of those."

Although Eubank wants to fight again, he can't say when. He stated at the end of last year: "I will not box again until I'm back to 100 per cent and I don't know when that will be.

"But one thing's for certain," he added, "for the fans that have supported me through thick and thin, I will do everything in my power to make sure that one day the old me makes a big comeback."
